Service As Action

Service as Action (SAA)

Empowering Students to Change the World

The Goal for Grades 9 & 10

Service as Action is a fundamental part of the MYP. It’s about taking what you learn in the classroom and applying it to help others. This year, your target is 20 Hours Total (approximately 5 hours per quarter).

  • Deadline: All hours and your final Process Paper must be submitted by April 30, 2026.

The 4 Types of Service

To have a well-rounded experience, you should try to engage in different styles of service. Here is how we define them:

Type 1

Direct Service

Interaction that involves face-to-face contact with the people or animals you are helping.

Example: Tutoring a younger student in math or volunteering at an animal shelter to walk dogs.
Type 2

Indirect Service

Supporting a cause where you don't see the recipients, but your actions provide a clear benefit.

Example: Organizing a school-wide canned food drive or planting trees in a local park.
Type 3

Advocacy

Speaking up for a cause to create awareness and encourage others to take action.

Example: Creating a social media campaign or a poster series about the importance of water conservation.
Type 4

Research

Gathering and reporting information on a social or environmental issue to help find a solution.

Example: Conducting a study on local air quality and presenting the data to the school board to suggest improvements.

Reflective Success

Remember: Service isn't just about "doing." It's about Reflecting. For every project, ask yourself:

  • What new skills did I develop?
  • How did I grow as a global citizen?
  • What challenges did I face, and how did I overcome them?

*Your Process Paper (Due April 30) will be based on these reflections.
