Middle Years Program (MYP)

MYP

9th grade student qualifications

Middle Years Program for International Baccalaureate is a 5-year program that culminates in the 10th grade (year 5). Students begin MYP in either the 6th or 7th grade at either CFIS or Raney middle schools. However, students may enter the MYP at Centennial in their 9th grade year if they meet the following qualifications:

Student has at least a 3.0 G.P.A

Student is capable of handling honors level classes

Student is capable of handling enhanced Mathematics classes

Student is highly motivated to succeed

MYP is an inclusive program but it is also a rigorously challenging academic program for students that are self-motivated with a desire to achieve scholastic excellence. MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. The personal project in the 10th grade indicates the strength of this connection. Students who complete the MYP are well-prepared to undertake the IB Diploma Programme

IB - Middle Years Program (MYP): Grades 6 - 10

Global Contexts for Teaching and Learning:

Global contexts direct learning towards independent and shared inquiry into our common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet. Using the world as the broadest context for learning, MYP individuals and societies can develop meaningful explorations of:

  1. identities and relationships
  2. orientation in space and time
  3. personal and cultural expression
  4. scientific and technical innovation
  5. globalization and sustainability
  6. fairness and development.

The different subject areas will employ the global contexts in different ways specific to their subject area.

Approaches to Learning:

All MYP units of work offer opportunities for students to develop and practise approaches to learning (ATL) skills. These skills provide valuable support for students working to meet the subject group’s aims and objectives.

ATL skills are grouped into five categories that span the IB continuum of international education. IB programmes identify discrete skills in each category that can be introduced, practised and consolidated in the classroom and beyond.

While ATL skills are relevant across all MYP subject groups, teachers may also identify ATL skill indicators especially relevant for, or unique to, a particular subject group or course.
